I am just taking up golf seriously this year and took a couple lessons and have been trying to get out once a week at least. I am scoring right around 100, but my putts are averaging around 43 per round. I would be consistently in the 90's if I could bring that number down. Any tips on swing tempo and judging speed? I seem to read the greens okay but am always either 10 feet past or 10 feet short. Thanks. |

Just practice a bunch of putts from different distances.... master one distance until you move to the next, this will train you to have a feel for how hard to hit it.

Before I play 18, whether I played there before or not: finding time to warm up on the practice green before the round is crucial. One of the drill is long distance lag putting. Lag 3 or 4 balls to a target longer than 20-30 ft. would give you an idea of the speed of the green for that day. Repeat the process until you could get all the golf balls within 3' circle of the target. |

Know which way the grain is running, and before you putt, step off the entire green to get a feel for which way the putt will want to go. sometimes especially on bigger sized greens the break can be deceptive where a seemingly straight putt could really be downhill and to the right, and this would effect many putts. The most part just find an approach that works for you. Putting is all feel and you need to have something that's comfortable for you. Good luck and keep up the hard work, it'll pay off.

Another tip on long putts be sure to keep your hand pressure very light. I learned a couple years ago that the tighter I held the putter grip, the harder it was to get the right speed on lag putts. keep the same routing (hopefully one that helps you feel the right "weight" to have in your hands through the putt) and relax your grip.

Thanks for the tips. I have been spending a bunch of time at the range. It looks like I'll need to spend just as much time on the putting green. I don't always get there beforehand to practice, so will have to start allowing more time for that. Much appreciated. |

If you can release tention in your shoulders and back the putter head will release better and your ball will start rolling sooner. |

i try lag just about everthing. taking the 3 put out of the picture. one way to get ur speed right is the uh..... well i dont know the name of it but, just mesure how far away you are in feet and bring the putter back in inches. 4 foot putt, 4 inch backswing. simple as that untill you get a feel for the green the try to get a lil more aggressive.

On long putts try to visualize a 2-foot circle around the hole.... it takes a lot of pressure off of you, and it also will cut down on your 3-putts. On the practice green you can place a club 2-feet behind the hole you are putting at.... try to keep your putt between the hole & the club. You miss 100% of the putts you never get to the hole.... from the immortal words of Ron Burgandy, "it's science!"

3, 6, and 9 feet putts are a must to practice. Practice from those distances @ home and @ the putting green. One you are comfortable from there. you will find that 2 putts per hole will be your goal on every green. Lags are also a must, but you will see that not only will you try to get it close, you will be so comfortable from 3,6, and 9 feet that it will we like clock work. When you practice @ home, you should putt to a target. If it's the wall, try not to bang the ball at it. Instead, you want it to die @ the wall or touch it softly. If you use a line or practice hole, the same apply, just focus on not blowing it by your target. The focus is feel. Repeat the feel and get your distance ...... PEACE |
