So I was doing my usual Youtube-ing a few weeks ago, looking at some Ben Hogan footage. On the "related videos" tab, up popped some videos from a username Sevam1. The guy's name is Mike Maves, from Ontario, and the guy knows and explains the Ben Hogan/Moe Norman approach as well as anyone I've ever heard. His own swing combines key elements of those two ballstrikers, and while you can't see the ball flight on most of the videos (most are face-on), you will know by the sound at impact. Not many people can make that sound, you know.

Anyway, he doesn't get very technical in his descriptions, which I agree with. I've long thought that today's "position" teaching method was the wrong way to go, and this guy feels the same way. Each individual video is just a little tidbit of knowledge, but I think he's put it all together in an ebook. I haven't checked that out though.

Here's a link to get you started:

The cameraman asking the questions is kind of a goofball, but the lesson is really good. Check it out!

He has a clear understanding of the fundamentals and practice them also.

The narration is something else. Must have been a beginner at golf.

Cool post. I watched just about every one of his videos last night and they were quite informative and I think will be very helpful to my game. By the way, I had already learned about flaring the left foot but I tend to only do it with the longer irons - I'm gonna try it with all of them.

Also, in surfing his videos and such I came across the website www.secretinthedirt.com and the videos with Steve Elkington are hilarious. Lyin Lewis would love the one with the old hickory clubs.

Actually, I posted another thread about a month ago showing those videos with the Elk playing hickory clubs. (I even sent LyinLewis a PM with the link because I knew he would love it!) That thread was "A Little Myth about Grip Pressure" I think.

Anyway, I'm glad you guys are enjoying Mike. He's obviously a very talented ballstriker, but also knows exactly why he's so good at it. That doesn't happen often, you know!

I'm at work, so I can't check out the video right now....but based on what you've written I get the feeling that this is one of those cases where the saying, "Those that can do, and those that can't teach" comes into play. One thing I have commonly seen with tour players being interviewed or doing instructional videos is that they have a hard time actually explaining the sciences of the swing. They tend to speak on the "feel" of the swing...to me that is just another level of golf that is unobtainable.

I was just watching Bobby on youtube yesterday...It's funny to me how the greats always look so effortless. And I wonder...were he around now would his swing have been different considering today's courses and technologies?

Trust me...if you haven't watched them yet, you'll notice that he is one who "can do, and CAN teach." His instruction is definitely not for the rank beginner, that's for sure. But if you've got some idea of the golf swing, everything he says is readily applicable. He's not that esoteric in his teachings...it's very clear and easy to understand.
